The Electronics Service Manual - CD-ROM version out now. |
| What ESM is all about | |
| ESM, the Electronics Service Manual, is a unique publication which aims to provide clear and concise instructions on how to test and diagnose faults on a wide range of electronic equipment, providing users with the level of knowledge and confidence required to tackle even the most complex faults. It is a publication that is ideal for use by technicians, engineers, students and hobbyists. | |
| The ESM Base Manual | |
ESM
recognises that many users will wish to specialise in particular areas
of electronic maintenance, whereas others will wish to obtain a rather
more broad understanding of how to service electronic equipment generally.
For this reason the Manual and its Supplements include sections which
deal with general concepts as well as those dealing with specific maintenance
tasks. |
|
| Whatever the user's level of interest and knowledge, a greater understanding of electronic principles and their application to electronic circuits will undoubtedly result from regular reference to ESM. Many of the skills and techniques described are readily applicable to other areas of electronics. Expertise in the repair of audio amplifiers, for example, can be immediately applied to the field of tape recording. The circuit techniques may be different, but the principles and components remain the same. | |
| About the Editor | |
| Mike Tooley B.A. is the Editor of ESM and has written the entire contents of the Base Manual. At the time, Mike was Director of Learning Technology at Brooklands College of Further and Higher Education in Surrey, England. The Faculty is responsible for the design and delivery of a wide range of electronics courses leading to NVQ, GNVQ City and Guilds, and BTEC qualifications. Mike has many years of experience in teaching electronics and is the renowned author of many books and magazine articles on the subject. The Supplements are jointly written by Mike and other contributors who are experts in the field about which they are writing. | |
| ESM Coverage | |
| As will be seen from the following table, ESM is divided into nine parts, each dealing with a major topic. Each part is further divided into sections that deal with sub-topics. | |
| ESM Part Reference | Brief outline of contents |
|---|---|
| PART A - SAFETY | The first part of the Manual deals with safety in the broadest sense and should be regarded as essential reading. The personal safety of equipment repairers and of those around them is of paramount importance, and for professionals there are legal obligations involved as well. Amongst the topics included here is a description of the Health and Safety at Work Act in sufficient detail for readers to understand its implications for both employers and employees. |
| PART B - UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDGE | A wealth of information within this bulky part provides readers with the basic knowledge needed in order to deal effectively with a wide range of components and circuits. It has been designed primarily with the newcomer in mind, but it will also serve as a valuable refresher for those who have been "in the business" for some time. |
| PART C - PRACTICAL SKILLS | Many essential practical skills are required by electronics service engineers. This part is devoted to how to acquire them. |
| PART D - TOOLS AND TEST EQUIPMENT | Advice on setting up a workshop and choosing its tools is offered in this part. Also provided is a practical introduction to the selection, care and effective use of a variety of the most common items of electronic test gear. |
| PART E - SERVICING TECHNIQUES | Principlally through the Supplements only, Part E deals with generic case studies for the most common types of electronic equipment, featuring fault symptoms, fault-finding charts, voltages, waveforms, etc. Representative circuits are presented together with a brief technical description, plus details of adjustments and measurements required. |
| PART F - TECHNICAL NOTES | Part F is assigned for a wide and diverse range of technical notes on the servicing and routine maintenance of popular items of electronic equipment |
| PART G - REFERENCE DATA | Dedicated to reference data for a variety of semiconductor and other product types, this section helps to identify active electronic devices. It includes maximum ratings, pin connections and substitution information. |
| PART H - USEFUL ADDRESSES | Exactly as its title suggests, including web links! Manufacturers' logos are also included in this part, to help you identify difficult components. |
| PART I - INDEX | Within the Manual index, subjects are cross-referenced by word and key phrase. The CD-ROM Supplements are also provided with their own indexes. |
